Spinal Manipulation Therapy/Chiropractic Adjustment

Sometimes referred to as a spinal 'adjustment', refers to the process of skillfully applying a controlled force to restricted joints and moving them beyond their physiologic range of motion. This can result in an immediate decrease in musculoskeletal pain, increase in range of motion, effects on the nervous system and an increase in function. As Chiropractors, we utilize spinal manipulation or the adjustment as our main form of therapeutic intervention. In North America, Spinal Manipulation Therapy is utilized by Osteopathic Physicians and some Medical Specialties .

Vertebral Axial Decompression/Spinal Decompression

VAX-D (Vertebral Axial Decompression) is a patented medical technology that gently stretches the spine and decompresses discs. Pressures in the lower lumber spine can be as high as+800 mm of mercury during many common daily activities. VAX-D Treatment is able to reduce the pressure in the lumbar spine down to levels of –160 mm of mercury, allowing fluids and nutrients to re-enter the disc; reducing swelling and relieving the pressure on pinched nerves. In short, VAX-D breaks the cycle of pain caused by bulging and degenerated discs and helps the body heal itself.Patients that typically undergo this procedure suffer from Chronic Low Back Pain caused by: Sciatica, Herniated/Bulging Discs, Degenerative Disc Disease, Spinal Stenosis and Spinal Arthritis. Please visit our VAX-D Spinal Decompression web site www.sanmateobackpain.com or the informational www.vaxdusa.net to read the research.

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy refers to various techniques used to address joint restrictions and soft tissue dysfunction. It differs from chiropractic adjustments in that the movements are slower and use less force. Sometimes referred to as joint mobilization, manual therapy techniques are used to stretch contracted muscles, impart more range of motion to a joint, and re-set disarticulated joints. The techniques can be passive (patient does not engage muscles during the procedure), active (patient is asked to move the treated body part during the procedure), or active-resistant (patient applies a resistive force during the procedure).

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy modalities are usually incorporated into your treatment plan. While the chiropractic component mainly addresses the structural aspect of your musculoskeletal system, different physiotherapy modalities are often used in the different phases of your treatment plan. Some of the physical therapy modalities that may be used in addition to the chiropractic adjustments include the following:

Electrical Muscle Stimulation Therapeutic Ultrasound Mechanical Traction Manual Traction Hot/Cold Therapy

Exercise Therapy

There is a good deal of research that shows that specific, individualized, targeted exercise routines can be helpful in rehabilitating musculoskeletal injuries. Dr. Hindocha prescribes rehabilitation exercise routines which typically includes cardiovascular, stretching, strengthening and prioprioceptive components. The exercises we teach are easy to do, and don’t require bulky equipment. This is important, because you will be encouraged to do them at home in order to get the best possible results.

Massage

At Peninsula Spine & Sports Rehabilitation, Dr. Hindocha may perform soft tissue treatment which falls under the broad category of 'Massage'. Examples of there procedures are: Myofascial Release, Trans Friction Massage and soft tissue manipulation. Theses procedures are employed when there is a soft tissue component to your condition. They are usually done prior to the adjustment to relax soft tissue in order to get a more effective adjustment. Other indications may be to reduce edema and swelling or to break up myofacial adhesions. Referals for Therapeutic Massage are also available upon request.

Digital X-Ray

Digital x-ray is a form of x-ray imaging, where digital x-ray sensors are used instead of traditional photographic film. Advantages include time efficiency through bypassing chemical processing and the ability to digitally transfer and enhance images. Also less radiation can be used to produce an image of similar contrast to conventional radiography. Thus, less exposure for our patients who are undergoing a radiographic evaluation. Another advantage is that the image is stored electronically which makes the record immediately available. All of your x-rays will be reviewed initially by a Medical Radiologist prior to Dr. Hindocha's interpretation. For your convenience, there is a Medical Radiology Group located on the same floor as Peninsula Spine & Sports Rehabilitation.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRI is a medical imaging technology technique most commonly used in radiology to visualize detailed internal structure and limited function of the body. MRI provides a detailed view of soft tissue structures in the body and is very useful to visualize neurogic and musculoskeletal conditions. Although MR imaging is a relatively new technology, with the first human image produced in 1973, it has now become the Gold Standard for visualizing certain conditions. We are fortunate to have a MRI located on the first floor of our professional Medical Building for our patient's convenience.
